The Sunday Night Turn-Over

Over the years, I’ve worked to create little ‘systems’ in my homemaking to help make the job easier. It’s amazing how quickly things can go off the rails in this home-life occupation when we don’t plan ahead.

The kids these days call these systems “hacks.”

Should you find yourself drowning in the daily to-dos, allow me to explain a special “hack” to perhaps help bring you some fresh encouragement in your homemaking. Here it is: when it comes to prepping for the week ahead, I embark on what I like to call the “Sunday Night Turn Over.”

In my world, the week begins bright and early Monday morning. That means Sunday is a day of both rest, and preparation for the week ahead.

I start each Sunday after church (and lunch) by grabbing a trusty Post-It note. How generations survived before this incredible invention, I’m not sure. On this note, I write out the homemaking tasks that need doing for each day of the week ahead—Sunday through Thursday. I generally take Fridays and Saturdays off. For me, splitting up my housework throughout the week ensures that any given day isn’t too full. It makes homemaking easier to manage and overall, more enjoyable.

In essence, my list looks like this:

Sunday: Laundry Prep / Plan Menu / Create Grocery List / Clean Out Fridge / Stock Bathrooms with Supplies (if needed)

Monday: Clean Bathrooms x2 / Laundry / Water House Plants / Aldi Run / Other Errands

Tuesday: Dust & Vacuum Bedrooms

Wednesday: Wash Sheets & Shower Curtains

Thursday: Dust & Vacuum Kitchen & Living Room / Laundry

This “Sunday Night Turn Over” helps to make the myriad of weekly tasks that come with running a home that much easier. There are many things to do each day, and not having to think too much about the ‘when’ or the ‘what’ is helpful. In other words, it’s nice when the homemaker can run on auto-pilot due to the list of tasks already being laid out in advance. Perhaps your brain doesn’t need this. But at this age and stage of life—my brain most certainly does.

So, if you’re looking to make your life a little easier as homemaker, consider creating your own “Sunday Night Turn Over.” Naturally, your list will look entirely different than mine—and that’s the beauty of it. Our homes and families all have unique needs—the point is to find the most streamlined ways to fulfill them. In the end, our goal as Christian homemakers is to build up our homes for the glory of God and for the ones we love. We don’t need to overthink it. With prayer, careful planning and a heart committed to service, it can be done.

Onward we go, sisters!
